National Academy: Dawoud Bey

THE National Academy

Dawoud Bey

We created this film about the life and work of photographer Dawoud Bey for the National Academy on the occasion of the institution’s 2016 Academician induction ceremony. While not rooted in the studio, this film takes us into the Dawoud’s artistic practice as he explored Harlem and took photographs for his recent body of work, Harlem: Redux. We then tied that experience to what it meant to him to be inducted into the community of artists and participate in a legacy of artists as part of a greater “civic conversation.”
