David Hammons: Day’s End

In 2021, the Whitney, in collaboration with Hudson River Park, completed a permanent public art project by David Hammons. Entitled Day's End , this monumental installation takes its name from a work by Gordon Matta-Clark that was carved out of the same pier in the late 1970s.

We created a three part film series looking at different aspects of the project from Hammons unique creation, to the history of the site as an important destination for the city’s LGBT community, and lastly a look at the artist who inspired the piece, Gordon Matta-Clark.

We also captured a timelapse of the works’s construction in the Spring of 2021.
